Representing Clients in Family Law Matters
At Aranza Law LLC, we provide the following legal services.
Divorce
Starting the divorce process can feel daunting. An attorney will not only guide you through each step but will provide advice on each decision along the way. A divorce includes decisions regarding parenting time with children, child support, your home, bank accounts, retirement accounts, investment accounts, debts, additional real estate, business interests, and more. While it can be overwhelming to think about addressing all of these areas of life, Aranza Law, LLC will provide detailed, thoughtful advice to help you make the decisions that are best for you and your family.
Allocation of Parental Responsibilities
Illinois no longer uses the terms custody or visitation, rather referring to the combination of parenting time and decision-making power as the “Allocation of Parental Responsibilities.” Parenting time lays out when a child (or children) is with which parent. This includes how days of the week and weekends, holidays, and vacations are allocated between the parents. Decision-making power includes medical care, education, extra-curricular activities, and religion. Decision making can be shared or be held by one parent.
Child Support
Child support is based upon the incomes of both parents and the time the child(ren) spend with each parent. Aranza Law, LLC can help walk you through the determination so that you can understand the basis of any support to be paid or received. In addition to child support, parents can also be required to provide monetary support for health insurance, ordinary medical expenses, extracurricular and school expenses, and other expenses for the child(ren).
Maintenance
Maintenance, previously called alimony, is when one party pays support to the other. The decision as to whether maintenance is appropriate in any given case is based on the comparative incomes of the parties. If maintenance is ordered, it can be for a set amount of time (i.e. a certain number of years) or an indefinite period. The length of maintenance is based on the length of the marriage.
Post-Decree Matters
For various reasons, sometimes an issue comes up after a divorce is finalized. These often relate to parenting time, child support, or maintenance. However, there can also be issues that arise related to property distribution. Aranza Law, LLC can provide advise on what issues can be brought before the court after a divorce.
Mediation
In mediation, a neutral, third-party mediator works with both parties to make decisions around parenting time, decision-making, child support, maintenance, and property division. The mediation agreement then becomes the basis for the final order entered with the court. Aranza Law, LLC provides mediation services for family law matters.
Prenupital Agreements
When getting married, you may consider entering into a Prenuptial Agreement with your fiancé. Prenuptial agreements address the division of property, potential spousal support, and division of debts in the event of a future divorce. An agreement must be in writing and signed by both parties.

Liz Aranza
Attorney
I have practiced family law in Cook County and surrounding areas for over a decade. The matters that makeup family law are some of the most difficult that a client can face. I take the time to actively listen to my clients, to learn the details relevant to their individual situation, and to provide sound advice to guide them through the process. No two cases are the same, just as no two families are the same. I strongly believe in providing nuanced representation, fitting the specific of the case. I am a member of the Chicago Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, and Women’s Bar Association of Illinois. I received my B.S. in Public Affairs from Indiana University and my Juris Doctorate from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, OR.
